6 Sigma Certification: Put It To Work

Why should your company institute a program of Six Sigma certification?  What's all the fuss about?  In a word:  Quality.

How do you define quality?  How do your customers define it?  How about the top executives in your company?  How about the person actually interfacing with the customer?

The reason 6 Sigma certification works is simple:  The 6 Sigma approach defines quality in a way that aligns the interests of all these different stakeholders.

Quality in the 6 Sigma method means:  Reducing the variability, and hence the opportunity for defects, in outputs critical to stakeholders.

Let's stipulate that the most critical stakeholders are customers.  Without them the rest of your stakeholders won't be around very long.  By reducing defects for customers, we increase their satisfaction.  By increasing their satisfaction, we keep them coming back -- and telling their friends.  Moreover, we reduce wastage and rework, and therefore cut costs directly.  Indirectly, we also avoid some future costs of attracting new customers, since our satisfied customers are happy to come back, and do some of our PR work for us.

Result?  The customers are happy, which leads to greater profitability, which keeps the top executives happy.  And, as an additional benefit, we fixed a suboptimal business process that was keeping some employees from doing their best work.  Now they're no longer trapped in a flawed process, and they're happier too.

As a potential Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt, you should embrace individual 6 Sigma certification.  Achieving it will position you to deliver some of these benefits to your employer or client, right away.

As a company of almost any size, you can embrace 6 Sigma certification too -- on an organizational level rather than an individual one.  For a company, "Six Sigma Certification" means instituting a program of education and development for all levels of your organization, from top to bottom.

Top:  Top executives must support the certification program, and at least some of them must serve as "Champions."  Middle:  Managers and analysts are the people who will be certified individually, and who will carry out the process-improvement projects as Black Belts.  Entry Level:  Workers who are not yet ready to undertake personal certification can still be educated as to 6 Sigma goals and approaches, to be ready to do support work on the 6 Sigma projects that will soon be a common sight at your company.

From an individual level to an organizational level, the potential benefit of 6 Sigma certification is tremendous.  Get ready to make a difference!
